a new chapter

This morning, for the first time in twenty-one years, I do not have a child going off to school. RTA is married and soon to be moving closer to Texas. IRP and CPI are going to the college with me this morning to start classes there. IRP has gone before, but this is CPI’s first time to attend class on campus. He has a solid backing of Dual Credit courses from high school to send him on his way.

I am happy that my children have turned out so well, but will miss their younger selves. Well, at least until they begin to gift me with tiny replicas of themselves to spoil rotten.–TSG

Survival Mode

There are just two days left of “peak registration” before the term starts on Monday. This is a great thing; we are all stumbling about with a glazed look in our eyes. Yesterday, I was trying to help a student re-register for some classes that had dropped and he was very frustrated with me. He was trying to tell me about a change in the numbering of the courses, but I just could not get it. He said, “You have to listen sometimes!” I was listening, but my brain was not receiving. The message finally took root and the student was successfully enrolled. If we don’t get some rest soon, we are all going to be zombies. C’mon Sunday! TSG

The Switch-Up

Today’s “big reveal” at work turned out to be not so big. 😦

keeping FMP clad

Today, I went on one of my periodic searches for new work clothes for FMP. His work in construction means that he goes through pants rather quickly. He either rips them on something or gets paint on them. Fortunately, there is a large resale shop near us. For less than $25, I walked out with three pair of Dockers and a long-sleeved plaid shirt. One pair of pants is more suited for going to make bids. He dresses nicely for that, as you would imagine. When a pair of these get frayed or worn, he moves them into the “work” drawer. I feel a great deal of satisfaction when I can get him nice things for so little. As a bonus, I am helping people who have less than we do. TSG

Reclaimed Sari Ribbon Giveaway

One of my hobbies is jewelry-making and another is entering contests. They are both combined in this contest:http://www.allfreejewelrymaking.com/sweeps/Darn-Good-Yarn-Reclaimed-Sari-Ribbon-Giveaway. The beautiful ribbons they are giving away come in more than twenty colors. I would love to get my hands of some of these.

com’n, take the money and fly!

In true Gaudy fashion, CPI has found a way to make flying a paying venture. His flight was scheduled to stop in Phoenix where he would catch another to Seattle. He was going to call us when he got to Arizona and again when he reached Seattle. When he called, he apologized for not calling from Phoenix and then explained. It seems that the original flight was overbooked and the airline gave CPI a $536 credit for a future flight to wait for the one going straight to Seattle. Since that is what he wanted to do anyway (he didn’t have enough graduation money), CPI was thrilled to wait. As he told me, “I got paid to be convenienced!”.

travelin’ man

This morning at about 5:45, we dropped CPI off at the airport. This is his first time to fly and he was dressed for the occasion. As I may have mentioned, CPI has decided to bring elegance back to daily life. Accordingly, he was fully kitted out in a suit and tie. As he walked into the terminal, I was so proud that I was the mother of such a good-looking traveler.

He is on his way to Seattle to visit RTA and MFA. I am sure they will show him a good time. Judging from Facebook pictures, they have been practicing with MFA’s folks, who were in last week. Most of all, though, he is excited to be going somewhere by himself. If he runs true to form for our family, he will not want to stop going to new and exciting places EVER. My grandmother made her last trip in her late 80s to take a river cruise in New England. I have a picture of her taken the day she ate her first lobster.

Have a great time, CPI, as you run towards your wonderful future!

Love,
Mom (aka TSG)

a prayer is answered

RTA called yesterday to tell me some very exciting news. As I mentioned a few posts ago, he and AVB are starting a company together and also want to help other veterans. Last week, AVB met with a potential investor to show him the business plan and talk about the non-profit they want to start. This gentleman was very impressed and is going to invest a large amount to help RTA and AVB get started. I am so happy! I hope their business will really take off so that they can help many people.

Thank you, God!

truth in advertising

If I keep acting like I did today, I am going to be forced to dye my hair blond as a warning to others.

For instance, I asked a co-worker, “How are you doing this morning?”. She replied, “Good, don’t you remember our discussion about the radio station?”. Well, no, I apparently didn’t recall any of the earlier events of the day.

I certainly hope FMP doesn’t react to the new color of my hair like he did to the new length.

the doctor vs. the gym

I have been weighing myself on the manual scales at work. Thursday, they said I still weighed 246. Friday, the doctor’s scale of the same type read 241. I am sure you know which I like better. There is an electronic scale at the college, but it is in the office, which is rarely open in the summer. So, for the duration, I am not going to weigh myself. I will start again when I have access to a scale that is not used by all and sundry.
