day twenty-six

It has occurred to me that I would never buy at one time the number of Cokes whose caps I find on a typical Friday (today was not typical). The real value of the caps is the items I get for free to use or give as presents. So, while I will continue to record the number of caps I find, I will not assign them a monetary value. I will determine that when I redeem my points. Summer Session ended on the 20th and Fall Session starts Monday. The buildings are empty except for faculty, staff and those with business in the administration building. Today’s cap haul reflects the lack of traffic on most of the campus: three caps.

I also found $.28 in various machines on my daily walk. ~~TSG

days seventeen through twenty-three

Things have been a bit crazy around here as we approach the beginning of the semester. Since last time, I have found $1.28 and saved $5.00 with coupons for a total of $6.28 ~~TSG

day sixteen

I am afraid that there is not going to be a lot of excitement regarding “the scheme” for a bit. This is the busy season at the college and it is all I can do to get in my daily walk. As we near the beginning of the fall semester, that may even become impossible. Nevertheless, I can keep my eyes open and that is what I did. As a result, I found a quarter in the coin return of one of the vending machines this morning: $.25

today’s sadness and joy

Early this morning, a good man died. Although he was technically my mother’s cousin, he was as much an uncle to me as any of my actual uncles. Uncle Red was a fixture of my childhood and we often went to his house when we visited my great-grandparents in Mexia, Texas, or when we went to family reunions.

When I got ready to go to college, Uncle Red is part of the reason I chose Texas A&M. His name went on my application in the spot where it asked about family who had attended. To date, my sister, my brother and three nieces have also gone to this school for undergraduate studies. Another sister took a master’s there. Two days ago, my youngest child applied to A&M. In the essay portion, CPI spoke of our family’s tradition of attendance. Uncle Red’s name led the list. I like to think he would have been pleased had I had the chance to tell him.

As a Christian, I believe that I will see Uncle Red again. He is in heaven now, free of the infirmities that had come with advancing age. As a human, I grieve. Another piece of my childhood is gone from the earth. Rest in peace, Uncle Red, and save me a seat at the party! All my love!~~TSG

day twelve

I went out briefly to get coke and coffee for me and FMP and found an old metal chair. I spent the rest of the day with the first migraine I have had in over a decade. No idea where that came from.

day eleven

Last work day of the week, otherwise known as cap-collecting day. I found 10 lids at the Coke machine rate of $1.50 each: $15.00
I also found some old golf clubs by the curb. They seem to be selling on Ebay for $10.00 to $20.00 each. I will count them in my total if/when I sell them.~~TSG
