Despite what some would have you believe, this has been a good week in America. The law was followed and a free, legitimate election was held. People who are happy are by no means allowed to harass, injure or otherwise disturb the peaceful expressions of those who are not happy. Dissenters who do not break any of our other laws cannot legally be retaliated against. This is America and that is how democracy is done.

Today is Veterans’ Day. Today, we thank those who make free, legitimate elections possible. In other parts of the world, people are not allowed to vote secretly. Everyone knows how everyone else voted. Imagine the intimidation factor from those who hold power and will do anything to keep it. Some places don’t even hold elections. Whichever group is strongest just takes control. Might makes right. In other places, just getting to the polls is dangerous. People are killed or severely injured for daring to attempt to exercise their “rights”.

Is our system perfect? Of course not, but it is the closest to perfect of any yet invented. The maximum number of people are given the right to freely decide their own destiny. This is America. We can make it better, but it is still the best thing going.

THANK YOU to our sponsors!!! You are the best!!!

scheming, the halloween edition

Since last time, I have found $4.12 in change. Also, I start a new job tomorrow that pays enough more to cover the $20 per day estimate. Just think how much faster I can reach my goals now!

Scrap Run #2

Yesterday, FMP had to work a special event, so I prevailed upon CPI to drive the truck to the scrap yard. The seat belt on the driver’s side is broken and FMP bolted it to the floor to fit him while we looked for a replacement. We finally found one, but haven’t had time to install it. Unfortunately, the guys are much smaller across the hips than I am. This is how CPI came to be driving his perfectly capable mom to the scrap yard. Safety first.

On this run, we had some copper pipe that a neighbor had given me when he found out I was scrapping. This was the major money-maker. For the entire load, we got $50.30. In addition, I have found $3.43 in change since we last “spoke”. This is for a grand total of: $53.73. I gave CPI $10.00 for taking time to drive down to the yard. So, I netted $43.73.

I’m off to enter the codes from caps I have found and taken off my own drinks. There are 16 on my desk at the moment. I am sure there are more in my purse, which I am going to look for now. Have a great week!~~TSG

back to “scheming”

Since the last time I reported on the scheme, I have collected $2.28 in loose change from various sources. Also, we turned in the scrap we had gathered up through last Saturday and separated out into various categories. The truck was not tightly packed at all and I decided that, if we got at least $20, it would be worth it to try it on a more serious basis. We made $26.60 ~~TSG

we’ve had enough sorrowful joy, thank you

Saturday, my grandmother’s last remaining sibling died. Aunt Lucy had just turned 92. She was a pioneer in a male-dominated field and forced the men to respect her and pay her comparable wages by a combination of determination and extreme competence. She lived life on her own terms, not marrying until late in life even though marriage and family was the expectation of women in her era. And, we all loved Uncle Jack, the man she chose.

After Uncle Red’s death, Aunt Lucy began refusing her breathing treatments. Uncle Red had been a particular favorite of many of his aunts and uncles, especially after his own mother was killed in a train accident that also took the life of his first-born child. Aunt Lucy was old, but I think she died of sorrow. She told those who were with her that she just wanted to “go home to Jesus and my family”.

If it would not have meant I was also dead, I would have loved to have seen the reunion of the ten children, their parents and all of the others who had gone before. Maybe Jesus will put it on “replay” for me when I get there.~~TSG

days twenty-seven to thirty-three

August turned out to be a very hard month for us. I have collected $2.03 since the last time I posted and saved $20.00 at the grocery store today with coupons and marked-down items for a grand total of $22.03.  ~~TSG

day twenty-six

It has occurred to me that I would never buy at one time the number of Cokes whose caps I find on a typical Friday (today was not typical). The real value of the caps is the items I get for free to use or give as presents. So, while I will continue to record the number of caps I find, I will not assign them a monetary value. I will determine that when I redeem my points. Summer Session ended on the 20th and Fall Session starts Monday. The buildings are empty except for faculty, staff and those with business in the administration building. Today’s cap haul reflects the lack of traffic on most of the campus: three caps.

I also found $.28 in various machines on my daily walk. ~~TSG
